2006 Dare to Care
More than 250 people participated in South Florida Urban Ministries' (SFLUM) fifth annual Dare to Care service project. This year's community projects were in the neighborhoods around the host church Perrine Peters UMC. April 29th proved to be a bright yet comfortable day, perfect for picking up trash, restoring parks and having a block party.
SFLUM also partnered with the Perrine-Cutler Ridge Council, which promotes community minded economic development in the region, to connect with additional partners, including the offices of County Commissioners Sorensen and Moss as well as concerned business leaders.
Registration began at 8:30 and volunteers were soon moving mulch, cleaning canals and painting posts; supported by local police, Miami Dade Solid Waste and local fire and rescue. Youth groups and adults from a dozen United Methodist Churches took part in the cleanup and created a positive and friendly atmosphere for the local volunteers and community.
This was the first year that SFLUM organized a party to follow the service project and there was plenty of food, fun and fellowship. Youth enjoyed a bounce house, obstacle course and a rock-climbing wall along with an informal game of 'Quick! Get it,' which was organized by some strong gusts of wind.
